Troops Overseas

BAGHDAD – Army Sgt. Robin Cameron stood guard outside a once opulent Iraqi shopping mall that now serves as a small U.S. military outpost, trying not to think about what he was missing with his family on Christmas.

"It's just another day in Iraq," he said, waving through a convoy of armored vehicles heading out to patrol Baghdad's Mansour neighborhood, once home to Saddam Hussein's favored officers and later an insurgent stronghold known for its deadly attacks on American troops.

Although troop levels are expected to start declining after provincial elections on Jan. 31, the same number are in Iraq today — about 146,000 — as in May 2003, when President George W. Bush declared the end of major hostilities two months after the invasion.

As of Christmas Day, at least 4,218 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war, according to an Associated Press count. The latest was a soldier was killed in a rocket or mortar attack Thursday near Mosul in northern Iraq, the military said in a statement.

On large bases and small outposts across the country, American troops marked Christmas with special meals and chapel services.

At Forward Operating Base Prosperity, in the heart of Baghdad, Capt. Jonathan Hilton took a moment Thursday to think about his family.

"I miss my family. This is my second Christmas here," said Hilton, of Orlando, Fla. "We are close to going home and they are doing a great job of taking care of soldiers and letting us experience Christmas as best they can."

On the other side of Baghdad, Cameron, 29, of Leesville, La., knows it's not just another day. In quiet moments, he will let his mind drift to his wife and two children.

But sometimes, he says, it's just easier not to think about what you're missing.

For Cameron and the other soldiers of the 4th Squadron, 10th Calvary Regiment of Fort Carson, Colo., at the Adil Shopping Center, their 15-month deployment ran through two Christmas seasons in Iraq.

Though the signs of the season are everywhere at the defunct shopping mall — from potted pines decorated with lights to stockings hung over desks — it is the spirit that is sometimes hard to maintain.

"A lot of guys struggle to find meaning in Christmas. I keep reminding them what it's about. It's a season of hope," said chaplain Capt. Matt Hemrick, of Belmont, N.C., on Christmas Eve.

But even Hemrick, 31, said his time in Iraq has made him look at Christmas in a new light.

"Until this season, I never had to live out" the season of hope, he said. "Christmas to me is spending time at home. Once you get over here, it really hits you what it really is all about."

With a more than 80 percent drop in violence in Iraq — attacks are down from 180 a day last year to about 10 a day this year, there are reasons for soldiers to be hopeful. The U.S. military, though, has acknowledged the improved security conditions remain fragile.

Sgt. Major David Dantzler lost 19 men during his last deployment. This time, he said, there have been no casualties.

It's perhaps in that spirit, that Dantzler for weeks has been asking soldiers if they mailed Christmas cards home, if they put up decorations, if they picked up holiday care packages mailed by strangers half a world away.

Dantzler 44, of Cleveland, Tenn., says he's trying to help his soldiers stave off depression and remind them about the sacrifices of the families, too.

"People say it must be easier the more you" deploy, he said, shaking his head. "It's not easy."

Dantzler, like his men, has missed many moments with his wife and two children, now almost grown.

"The Christmases I was used to, with small children, are completely gone," he said. "I don't feel like I've been cheated. But I feel like I lost a lot here."

With less than two months to go before the soldiers return to Colorado, Dantzler and others say they are trying to keep focused on their end of deployment gift: time home with family.

"I took it all for granted, you know, my wife, my kids," said Sgt. Michael Serrano, 25, of Perth Amboy, N.J. "My son told his teacher all he wanted for Christmas was a Hulk toy and for his dad to come home. I'm going to make sure he gets both."

Inside a makeshift chapel in the defunct mall, Hemrick and Dantzler worked out musical arrangements for "Joy to the World" and other standards for a service to be held hours later.

While many of the soldiers' family members will make dashes to malls to buy last-minute presents, this Christmas in this Iraqi mall Dantzler is looking for only one gift: peace.

"We've had a couple of days in Iraq without any attacks. So I know it's possible," he said. "Even one day of peace, that would be great."

Merry Christmas from Idaho

I hope that you all had a wonderful, relaxing, love-filled day. Our day here in Idaho was wonderful. We loved being together, but we felt a bit empty. We were missing Brandon and Amanda. And of course, it just didn't feel right without Tony. However, we were able to talk to all 3 of them today, so that helped a little.
It has been years since I have seen this much snow. It is beautiful. Really, I love snow. I don't like cold weather, but I love it when it snows.....so moral of the story is....if it is cold out...there had better be snow! :)
I will post more pictures of the kids opening presents another day. But here is a glimpse of Christmas here.
Love to all

Thoughts on a VERY snowy and beautiful Christmas Eve

First off, let me say that I sincerely hope and pray that each of you are having a blessed time tonight with friends, family, and loved ones. Remember the true reason for the season, as that is was gets me though on nights like tonight.
Here is a little something I was thinking about tonight. My brain isn't working really well, but I tried.

Loneliness is….

- tucking kids into bed on Christmas Eve alone
- shopping for Christmas presents without someone to call and consult if it is indeed the perfect present
- sitting on a bench by yourself, outside, as the biggest snowflakes you have ever seen fall and blanket the world in white beauty
- standing below some mistletoe with no one to kiss
- wandering the house on Christmas Eve with no one to talk to
- surfing the internet for absolutely nothing the night before Christmas
- seeing your son cry because he misses his daddy and wants him home for “Cwismas”, but not being able to do anything but cry because you feel the same way
- a sick, deep, empty feeling in your stomach
- sitting in front of a fireplace with a soft blanket around you, but no strong, protective arms to hold you
- knowing that work comes before you, even on Christmas Day
- feeling completely alone in a house full of people
- when not even 44 North will warm you up
- knowing that the next years you will be alone more than you will be together with the love of your life
- not even wanting to wake up to Christmas morning, but rather, wanting to just sleep through the whole day and wake up on December 26th.
- spending your first Christmas without your brother and not getting his special hugs
- having no one to wake up with, to get the first kiss of the day from

Ultimately, loneliness is:
being the wife of a deployed soldier

Good Times in Idaho

My family will think that I have absolutely lost my mind once they read this. Just about as long as I have been alive, I have NOT enjoyed going outside in the snow....to ski, to play, or to do anything else crazy like that. Well, today was a change. I originally sent the kids out, all bundled up, by themselves into the back yard. Then I heard Tony's voice saying (from a conversation earlier in the day) "You better get out there and make a snow man for me!" So, I got some snow clothes on and ventured out. I was weary of all this so-called fun that was to be had. The kids and I headed to the front of the house. We built a snow man. We shoveled the sidewalks. Then Dimitri decided he wanted me to make a "snow bed" for him to take a nap in.
We had a really fun time. Now I must say, that no one besides the kids saw me outside, as the others in the house were resting......so you are just going to have to trust me!
Honey.....I tried to make you proud!
OH, forgot to mention that Dimitri and I were the ones that had the most fun. We had a blast....Denaiza on the other hand, had a huge temper tantrum...go figure.

Fun Night Out with Little Man

I must say that, since I have to settle with not having my husband here to enjoy winter nights in Boise, I still have it pretty good. I had a wonderful date with my son. He dressed up "just like Daddy." He took me out to dinner and then we went to the hockey game. It was really fun. Dimitri had a wonderful time and I don't think he stopped talking the ENTIRE time.
There were some hockey players sitting next to us and they got a chuckle out of Dimitri. Especially when he said, "Hey, you go to time out! We don't fight like that!"

Fun Website

Do you need birth announcements, adoption announcements, Save-the-Date, Thank you, or any other personally designed cards? If so, you have to check out the things that my friend Kristina is doing. She has some samples up on her website, but she can do so many more. Take a look.....even if you are just curious and want to see some really cute cards!

Just a little chilly....

So......I guess I found the cure for Texas heat.....a Texas winter! This place is crazy! It is currently 28 degrees outside and with the humidity and wind it "feels like" 16 degrees!!!!! Yep....you read that right....16 degrees!!!
I think the kids and I will all go putour long johns on and will all curl up in the bed together tonight because....lucky for us....our dear heater is broken....still.
Oh, the joys! But the good news is that God loves us and he has provided us with some really really snuggly down comforters! I wonder if they make hot chocolate IV's? hmmmm
Sweet Dreams Y'all!

This morning

Dimitri- "Mommy why is my head so big?"
Me- "Because you are so smart."
Dimitri- "Daddy doesn't have a big head."
Me- " Oh, ok."
Dimitri- "Maybe he isn't smart."
Me- "No, he is pretty smart."
Dimitri- " Well maybe he should eat his green beans so that his head will get big too, like me."
Me- "Hmmmmm, I didn't think that you like green beans."
Dimitri- "I eat them so that I can fly like Superman."

Somtimes my brain feels like a pinball....boing, boing, boing.....at our house, our conversations are so random!!!! any "normal" person would feel crazy here.

A Bit Confused.....

Well, I guess I shouldnt' be....this is Texas....BUT, the heater folks came out to the house today to look at the heater that isn't working. (Which wouldn't be a big deal except that is has been dropping down in the low 40's at night.) They looked at it and figured out what the problem is. "It was too cold outside for the heater to work."
Yep! That was their explanation. Apparently "these heating systems weren't designed to work when the temperature is below 35 degees."
OH!!! My mistake....silly me, I thought that is when you are supposed to use it. HA! What on earth was I thinking?

BSU on ESPN2

Hey everyone.....make sure you watch the game today. It will be on ESPN2 at 4:00pm Mountain time. I made a sign for Tony that I hope will get on tv! Tony gets some games over there, so I am praying that maybe the sign would be on tv and then they would play this game over there.....I know, I know, that is a lot to ask for, but God can do it.
We will see....if not, at least I will take a picture of the sign for him. I am sure he will appreciate the effort.

Oh, funny story, so I went out this morning to shop and I think that my dear husband could feel his money being drained because he called me just as I started shopping in the Polo section at Macy's! That man!!! :) Great timing!

Thanksgiving

We are so very thankful. First and foremost we are thankful for a loving and forgiving God who sent His son so that we might have a relationship with Him. Wow, how incredibly awesome is that? The gift of His mercy and grace should be enough to have us celebrate Thanksgiving everyday!!!!
We are also thankful for the man that God brought into our lives. Tony Joe....we miss you today.
We are thankful for food to eat. There are so many that are struggling with this basic necessity. We are thankful for a loving and supportive family; they have proven they will always be there for us. I hope that your Thanksgiving was a special one and that you had a chance to reflect on all the blessings in your life as well.

So here is what it looked like on our Thanksgiving:

And here is what it looked like for Brandon and Amanda's Thanksgiving:

hmmmmmm, can we swap for next year? lol

Bryan and Nicole

We also had the joy of getting to see Uncle Bryan on this trip. It is always an encouragement to have him around as he is not only a great brother to me, but he is also very helpful and supportive with the kids and holding them accountable. It is a huge relief to me to have his hands and voice to help out!
Bryan's girlfriend, Nicole came up for the wedding, and to say that the kids had a blast with her would be an understatement! She is so fun and the kids really really loved being around her.

Wedding Fun

Brandon and Amanda has an amazing, gorgeous, breathtaking, beautiful........indescribable, wedding. My mom did an amazing job planning and putting all the little details in place. Everything from the party favors, to the flowers were perfect. Denaiza looked like a little lady, so grown up. Dimitri was, well, Dimitri, in his tuxedo with tails. They had the time of their lives at the reception dancing with all the other kids. (Amanda's sister have both adopted 2 children from Ethiopia, and Denaiza adored them all!)
It was really hard to do all the wedding things without Tony. As happy as I was for Brandon, I just felt a heaviness in my heart. I did my best to be strong and managed to get through the night with only a few tears.
The reception was held in the new sky box down at BSU. This site was more beautiful than words can describe. The room was all windows with an incredible view of Boise. You could see everything about Boise that Tony and I love SO much....the river, the fall trees, the foothills, downtown, and of course the Blue field!
Here are some pictures of the night. I will also include a link to some pictures that Amanda's brother-in-law took. Enjoy!

Trip to Idaho

We have been so blessed to be up in Idaho for the past several days. It has been a whirlwind, but what a great time has been had by all. We flew up on the 17th and the flights were smooth. The kids enjoyed the tv's on the plane. God blessed us from the start with a kind man helping me pull 2 of the 3 big suitcases from the shuttle into the airport. I was so glad God placed him there. We arrived in Boise really late, but very happy.

Brandon and Amanda flew in the next night. It was so great to see them, and to hug them. I really miss my brothers when we are apart.
Amanda and I were pampered by my mom and sent to get manicures and pedicures! It was a blast. Brenda, our pamperer, and friend, is always so fun to be around. Laughing is a great relazer, and she always makes me do lots of it. My mom was VERY creative and made cookies shaped like hands and feet and brought them to us to eat that morning! We are so loved and spoiled.

On Wednesday night we had some of our special friends over to the house to love on Brandon and Amanda. I loved seeing them all again. Being in Texas, I had kind of forgotten how much fun it can be to spend time with people you love. I get so isolated down there.....this trip has given me enough "interaction time" to last for several more months.....but like I said, being around these friends is a real blessing.

Brandon and Dimitri had matching shirts on that night. It was pretty cute. They were both wearing "pony" shirts that Daddy would have been very proud of!!! Brandon decided to try to teach Dimitri how to pose with a serious face. The picture below is proof of that. Too funny...

Conversations Continued

My mom said she likes to hear these....so here goes....

Denaiza - What's wrong mommy? You don't look so happy.
Me - Well, I am missing daddy a little bit and wish he could go with us to Idaho.
Dimitri - well mommy, he can't because he is too old and too sick in Iraq
Me - well, he is old, but not sick....

Later this evening.....
Denaiza - How is your tummy feeling?
Me- I feel a little nervous and stressed
Dimitri - Why is "the nervous" in your tummy?
Me- No dear, I am just feeling kind of funny.
Dimitri- Mommmmmmmmmy I am not a deer I am a Dimitri
Me- Oh silly me, so sorry
Dimitri - its ok, but you can be my dear

ok...another one

I have nothing of interest to write, so I have to depend on my son....so here is what went down today...
I have to give you a little background though on this one. Dr. Cofield is a child counselor that Dimitri has started seeing....

Ok, so I was getting teary-eyed sitting at the table reading my Bible. There is a situation in my life that I am trying to deal with right now, and my feelings are hurt and my heart is said....so I was reading my Bible. DImitri came up and said, "Oh mommy, why are your eyes crying?" I said "well, there is a lady that is being mean to me and it makes me sad." He said, while rubbing my elbow, "Ohhhh it is ok mommy, you can tell God about that mean lady or if you want I will take you to tell Dr. Cofield."

I couldn't help but laugh at that one.

Then Denaiza chimed in from across the room and yelled "Maybe if Daddy was here he could make her sit on the wall and tell her to use nice words!"

Oh,no, my dear, if daddy was here "the mean lady" might have a black eye for messing with his lady!!!

more of Dimitri

We arrived home today from a long outing. As Dimitri got out of the car I told him to go inside, take off his shoes, and go potty, and that I would be inside in a minute. He said "yes, mommy" and ran inside...like 15 seconds later, I turned around, and he was back outside, in the driveway, in his socks, jumping in a big rain water puddle!!!! I said "GET OUT OF THAT WATER! Why are you out here? I told you to go inside!" Then I mumbled under my breath....I wish you would turn your brain on sometimes..... well the little rascal heard me and turned around to me, holding his chin. He said " Ok mommy, I turned it on, right here" (pushing his chin)

How do I stay sane?

In Honor of our Soldier

Today, on Veteran's Day, the kids and I wanted to honor our favorite and most loved soldier.

Interesting Ideas

I saw this video and felt like so much of what this man is saying is how I feel. I hope that you will take the time to watch it.

You will have to cut and paste this into your browser.

Mary and her lamb

We were sitting at the table eating lunch and the kids were asking about God and Jesus. Denaiza said that "sins" means "owies" and that is why Jesus had owies when he died. We talked about how he rose up and now Jesus lives with God. So, Denaiza adds...." well, you know that Mary is flying around up there too." I said ok, why is that, and Denaiza said "because she was his mommy, and you always have to be with your mommy." Then Dimitri pipes in and says " NOooooo Denaiza, Mary isn't there, she is with her lamb." I was thinking the lambs in the barn when Jesus was born.....but then he says, "the lamb that followed her to school."
It might take you a minute....but you will get it!!! :) Life with 4 years olds can be quite humorus.

a week

yes, it has been a week without me posting....sorry.....it was a little bit of a hard week. Hopefully I will think of something inspiring to put on here tomorrow.
Good night

The New Hair-Do

It took a LONG time. I mean, a really long time, as in all weekend. I guess that is why they charge so much at the salons to do it. But my husband was proud and his comment regarding the new do was "way to go dear, you saved us like 100 bucks!" Yes, I do all that I can to impress my husband. In Proverbs 31 it talks about a wife's hands doing positive and helpful work for her family.....I guess in my world, braiding extensions for hours on end qualifies! Gotta stretch that dollar!

It turned out really cute. The only problem is that Dimitri started crying and threw himself on the floor when I told him "No, you may NOT have long hair like this." Guess he needs daddy back to remember how "cool" it is to get a short haircut.
Here are the pictures.

Yes, those are crystal and pink princess crowns!!!

Oh, and for all those of you who were wondering what the outcome was last night.....the tv guide went from 1-1:30 amd to 1:30am to 1:00am then to 1:30am then to 2:00am.....It was interesting. AND it got my mind wondering about a whole bungh of other things like....this is really a time in life where you could be two places at one time ex: at the store at 1:00amon November 2nd, 2008 the first time and at home at 1:00am November 2nd, 2008 the second time around...... I came up with a lot more, but I will spare you all.

Have you ever wondered?

Tonight we are supposed to set our clocks back one hour at 2am. So, since I am wide awake at this unpleasant hour, my mind started thinking about the time change. Have you ever wondered what the tv scheduling does when it is time to "go back an hour"? Do they repeat what was just on from 1am to 2am? If not, how do they differentiate the first 1am to 2am time slot from the second 1am to 2am time slot on the tv guide? This could become a very complicated subject if you really think about it. The poor tv producers that have to figure this out! My goodness, no wonder they make so much money! Well, I have about 19 minutes before I find out the truth about how it works....I will do my best to let you all know. (because I am sure the rest of the world is asleep and missing out on this momentous occasion)

One more thing, while I am on this whole time change topic, Iraq doesn't observe the change, SO now that my brain has officially switched over to translating all time that I see into 8 hours ahead, I now have to re-program it to calculate 9 hours ahead. Oh! Life is so full of complications!

More Weird Texas things...

I have two weird Texas things for all of you tonight...

1. You have to pay the city a fee to have a garage sale at your house!

2. The weather-lady for a local station is named Olga Breese (last name pronounced like Breeze)

***Her forecasts are always windy****
Such a strange place

Denaiza's hair

Well I decided to do something different with her hair. I am trying to do extensions. It takes a long time, and with this being my first time I am still very slow. I got about half done today. She likes the long hair!

NBA Season Starts

The NBA season is officially underway. Big deal huh? WELL YES it IS a big deal, let me explain why. You see different people mark time passing in different ways. Teachers use grading periods, in everyday "non-teacher" life to keep track of how much time has passed. You might hear "Well, the first 9 weeks is done" or "We are in the second semester now", etc.
For me, I tend to keep track of time with sports seasons. There is football, the Superbowl, basketball, March Madness, and the NBA finals. Makes perfect sense right?
So, back to why it is important that the NBA season has started.....I know that by the time the playoffs roll around, Tony will be home on R&R!!!! Isn't that exciting!!!! I am finally to a sports season that Tony will be back for. I am thrilled!!!

Wednesday evening

Wednesday evening the kids got to carve their first pumkin! I couldn't wait to make them stick their hands in that gooey yuckky mess!!! It is kind of like parent payback...just think of all those times the kids have gotten into things they weren't supposed to....hahaha now they HAVE to touch the yucky stuff. I know, weird mommy humor, but we have to laugh about something around here!
So....we sat out on our driveway and emptied the pumpkins. Then we made the faces. We cleaned off and then went inside to put candles inside. The kids had a lot of fun. Here are some pictures.
